Welbeck gets call

Sunderland striker Danny Welbeck was given a huge boost after being called into the England team by Fabio Capello following Aaron Lennon’s shock withdrawal.

England’s Tottenham Hotspur winger, Aaron Lennon, was given the nod to return to his club after the lad suffered a minor injury at the end of England’s Monday training session ahead of their friendly fixture against Ghana.

Aaron Lennon’s exit made Fabio Capello open the big door for 21-year-old Danny Welbeck, who is currently on-loan at Sunderland from Manchester United.

Danny Welbeck scored while featuring in Stuart Pearce’s England U-21 side against Denmark on Thursday, but despite his solid performance Welbeck was one of the players being released back to their respective clubs.

He has been in fantastic form for Steve Bruce’s side so far in the Barclays Premier League this season, forming a formidable partnership with Ghana teammate Asamoah Gyan – whom he will be facing on Tuesday.

  1. The friendly agaisnt Ghana is going to be a very odd England squad with most of the big players such as Ronney and Lampard being sent back to their clubs. Which is understandable, I am guessing that the clubs asked Capello to exclude them from the squad so that they are fresh and fit to play for the weekend as the Premier League season starts to heat up as it comes to a close. It will be good that players such as Welbeck will get the chance to try cement a future place in the England squad.
