Arsenal and Manchester United have been involved a tug of war for Brazilian born Portuguese defender Pepe with Real Madrid. Pepe’s contract talks with Real Madrid have stalled following a few contract issues with Real Madrid, with money apparently being the reason behind the move stalling.
Manchester United and Arsenal have been desperate to find defensive replacements following long-term injuries to crucial player Rio Ferdinand and Thomas Vermaelen. Both are monitoring many defenders at the moment and they have (at least for the moment) set their sights on Pepe.
The 28-year-old is out of contract in June 2012 and could be sold in the summer if he doesn’t sign the contract extension. Arsenal have been linked with Pepe for quite a while now.
But it is now out that Pepe has signed himself a contract to the Bernabau, reportedly tying him to Real Madrid to 2015, ensuring that he will stay in Madrid for at least two more years.
Both Manchester United and Arsenal are rumoured to switch their attentions to Phillepe Mexes (who plys his trade for AS Roma) and he is also out of a contract in the summer.
