Real Madrid progressed into the last 8 of the UEFA Champions League after an impressive victory over Lyon during the second leg of their last 16 in the Santiago Bernabeu.
Jose Mourinho’s men put up a breathtaking performance in front of their 76 thousand fans when they overcame the French powerhouse with Marcelo, Karim Benzema and Angel Di Maria finding the back of the net.
Real Madrid went through after defeating Lyon 4-1 on aggregate – their first appearance in the quarterfinals since the year 2004, when they were dumped out in the semifinals by Monaco.
The first goal of the match came in the 37th minute when Real Madrid’s Brazilian left back Marcelo received the ball from Cristiano Ronaldo and dribbled free into the area before beating goalkeeper Lyon goalkeeper Hugo Lloris with a well-timed curling shot.
Former Lyon striker, Karim Benzema, then put Real Madrid in the comfort zone by putting his side two goals up in the 66th minute after making no mistake from a 1-on-1 chance.
Real Madrid’s Argentinian winger, Angel Di Maria, then settled the scoreline 10 minutes later. Goalscorers Angel Di Maria and Karim Benzema were then brought off late in the match after a decent display by the both of them, substituted by Esteban Granero and Lassana Diarra respectively.
Lyon only had a total of 5 shots thorough the match (compared to Real Madrid’s 18), while 3 hit the target – 2 from their striker Bafetimbi Gomes.
Meanwhile, current Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho is setting his sigh on becoming the first manager in the history of the UEFA Champions League to win the prestigious tournament with three different clubs (having already won with his previous clubs Porto FC and Inter Milan).
Friday’s quarterfinal draw will determine which of the other last-16 teams that Real Madrid will face. They are Inter Milan, Barcelona, Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham, Schalke and Shakhtar Donetsk – all not easy opponents.
